UK Media hails future Phu Quoc International Airport as “a symbol of national prestige”
In a recent feature, The Sun, one of the United Kingdom’s largest newspapers, spotlighted the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport, highlighting the scale and vision behind the project ahead of Vietnam’s hosting of APEC 2027.
According to The Sun, the airport’s new terminal is designed in the shape of a mythical bird – the phoenix – in full flight, symbolizing Vietnam’s pride and rising global stature. The design is set to become a new icon of aviation architecture and technology in the country.

On June 19, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province officially approved Sun Group as the investor behind the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion. The project will be executed in two phases, from 2025–2027 and 2027–2030, with total investment nearing VND 22 trillion (approximately USD 860 million).
The expansion is being designed by leading global airport consultants — CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France). Aimed for completion before APEC 2027, the new airport is expected to deliver a seamless, premium, and smart experience that meets international standards, reinforcing Phu Quoc’s image from the very first point of entry.
To achieve this, the Total Airport Management (TAM) model will be adopted, integrating all operational areas of the airport — from landside to airside — including passenger flow, baggage handling, flight operations, and security. This comprehensive approach is designed to optimize performance, minimize disruptions, and elevate the overall passenger experience.
Advanced technologies help passengers save time and enjoy a more seamless check-in experience.
In terms of infrastructure, the future airport will feature an upgraded 3,500-meter runway (Runway 1) and a newly built 3,300-meter Runway 2, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 787, and Airbus A350. Cutting-edge technologies will also be deployed, including biometric identification, remote check-in, and automated baggage sorting, helping reduce processing time to just 15–20 seconds per passenger.
The Sun also reports that transport infrastructure across Phu Quoc is being upgraded to ensure seamless connectivity between the airport and key tourism and economic zones across the island.
The article describes Phu Quoc as “Vietnam’s offshore island paradise, affectionately dubbed the ‘Pearl Island’ for its natural beauty and stunning beaches.” In 2024, Phu Quoc was named the “World’s Leading Nature Island Destination” by the World Travel Awards, and in July 2024, it was ranked the second most beautiful island in the world by Travel + Leisure.
Phu Quoc’s airport project has also drawn interest from regional media. The Laotian Times reported that the expansion, aligned with preparations for APEC 2027, will elevate Phu Quoc into a regional hub for international conferences and tourism. The article notes that the airport will be fully equipped to welcome heads of state and high-level delegations during the summit.

Similarly, ASEAN Now (Thailand) praised the project’s symbolic and experiential value. According to the outlet, the phoenix-shaped terminal is not only an architectural statement but also sets a new benchmark for air travel in Southeast Asia. “The phoenix-inspired design embodies national pride and prestige while elevating the international standing of Vietnam’s aviation sector,” the article stated.
With its substantial investment and integration of cutting-edge technologies, the upgraded Phu Quoc International Airport is set to rival the world’s most advanced air hubs. Beyond serving as a gateway, the airport is positioned to become a key transit point in Southeast Asia, potentially attracting direct flights from Europe and the Americas in the near future. According to The Sun, this is a bold and symbolic step for Vietnam — a destination still known globally as one of the most affordable travel hotspots in the world.
